Catechetical Week: Begins Today

Theme of the Sunday: MESSIAH, BUT WHAT KIND OF MESSIAH?
We should take the question of Jesus to his disciples: “Who am I for you?” as addressed to each one of us. Now, as at the time of Jesus, there reap be a difference between the words we use to profess our faith and what we really believe. The terms, Messiah, Son of God, for Jesus mean the giving up of his life for others, ‘but what do they mean for us? This is the central theme of the gospel, prepared for us by the message of the first reading that tells how in the Old Testament God began to invite Israel to change. The second reading shows how the words of our profession of faith may be in the right area but that in practice our religion may lack the essentials of belief: works of mercy and love of others.

THE GLORIA
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you. We bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

FIRST READING
“I gave my back to those who struck me.”
A reading from the Book of Isaiah (Isaiah 50:5-9a)

The lord God has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, turned not backward, I gave my back to those who struck me and turned not my cheek to those who pulled out the beard; I hid not my face from shame and spitting. For the Lord GOD helps me; therefore I have not been confounded; therefore I have set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; he who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who is my adversary? Let him come near to me. Behold, the Lord GOD helps me; who will declare me guilty?

The word of the Lord.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 116:1-2.3-4.5-6.8—9 (R. 9)
R/. I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living.
Or:  Alleluia.

I love the Lord, for he has heard my voice, my appeal;
for he has turned his ear to me whenever I call. R/.

They surrounded me, the snares of death;
the anguish of the grave has found me;
anguish and sorrow I found.
I called on the name of the Lord:
“Deliver my soul, O Lord!” R/.

R/. I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living.
Or:  Alleluia.

How gracious is the Lord,
and just; our God has compassion.
The Lord protects the simple;
I was brought low, and he saved me. R/.

He has kept my soul from death,
my eyes from tears, and my feet from stumbling.
I will walk in the presence of the LORD
in the land of the living. R/.

SECOND READING
“Faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead.”
A reading from the Letter of Saint James (James 2: 14-1 8)

What does it profit, my brethren, if a man says he has faith but has not works? Can his faith Save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and in lack of daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what does it profit? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead. But some one will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I by my works will show you my faith.

The word of the Lord.

ALLELUIA Galatians 6:14
Alleluia. Far be it from me to glory except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. Alleluia.

GOSPEL
“you are the Christ… the Son of man must suffer many things.”
A reading from the holy Gospel according to mark (Mark 8:27-35)

At that time: Jesus went on with his disciples, to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, “who do men say that I am?” and they told him, “John the Baptist; and others say, Elijah; and others one of the prophets.” And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “you are the Christ.” And he charged them to tell no one about him. And he began to teach them that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. And he said, “get behind me, Satan! For you are not on the side of God, but of men and he called to him the multitude with his disciples and said to them, “If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the Gospel’s will save it.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

THE CREED (I Believe)
I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.  He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL

Celebrant:
God calls us to faith in him, on that comes with a willingness to deny ourselves and bear our crosses. Let us ask him for the grace to live our lives in accordance with his will and to willingly accept those trials that come our way.

FOR THE MINISTERS OF THE CHURCH: that they may never grow weary in bearing witness to the love of Christ in a world that is darkened by hatred and anger. We pray O Lord.

FOR OUR CIVIL LEADERS: that they may always respect the rights of the citizens and help promote religious freedom in our world. We pray O Lord.

FOR CHRISTIANS EVERYWHERE: that their faith in God may never be compromised, especially at those times of their lives when they are faced with great difficulties. We pray O Lord.

FOR THE POOR IN OUR COMMUNITY: that we may relate with them as children of the same Father and do all within our power to provide them with their needs. We pray O Lord.

FOR OTHER INTENTIONS: (the sick, church projects or other activities).

FOR THE DEAD, ESPECIALLY THOSE OF OUR PARISH COMMUNITY AND FAMILY MEMBERS: that they may find eternal rest with the Lord. We pray O Lord.

We pray in silence for our private intentions.

Celebrant:
God of mercy and love, may our humble supplication find favour in your sight and, by your gracious assistance, may we remain faithful to you, especially in our moments of trials. Through Christ our Lord.

R/. Amen.

TODAY’S REFLECTION
God’s logic is not the same with man; he pictures the world differently and acts in a way that may seem bizarre to us. Unlike David and his successors who fought many successful battles with the sword, Jesus the messiah whom for centuries the Jews expected to liberate them from their enemies and to gather them into a nation employs a new battle strategy. He becomes a lamb of sacrifice. He offers his back to be beaten, his beard to be plucked and his face to be spit on. In human logic we think that violence should be met with violence, evil with evil, and injustice with injustice, Jesus proves that things can be resolved differently. He absorbs with love and forgiveness the hatred and anger of his enemies and transforms it thus putting an end to the circle of violence. Take up your cross and follow me implies that we imitate Jesus in responding to violence with love and forgiveness and compassion.

PERSONAL DEVOTIONAL

Thank God for his word today.

Ask for mercy for the times you refused to accept God’s task or left it uncompleted.
Pray for the grace and anointing to finish your Christian race well and strong.

Tell God about that particular divine task assigned to you and the difficulties you are facing.

Pray for the empowerment of the Holy Spirit to complete that physical project/work.

Pray against all evil forces working to prevent you from completing your task, in your family, office, church.

Let Us Pray,
Holy Father, in the name of Jesus, I cry out for your mercy and forgiveness of my sins. I repent and renounce all of them. Forgive me, my God, for offending your image and likeness in me, for offending this same image and likeness in my neighbour.

Cleanse me in the precious Blood of Jesus Christ, purify every stain of sin in me, have mercy on me.

And now, Father, I want to open a blank page for this day that is beginning and I ask you, in the name of Jesus Christ, your Son, and my Lord, to fill it out with everything that happens to me today according to your will. Subject my will to yours as I put myself entirely in your hands to be led by the Holy Spirit through your pathways.
I proclaim that you are my God and Lord, the one who saves, sustains, exalts, protects, and heals me, in whom I put all my hope and trust. For everything I have received from you, I give you glory and thanks; for everything I am yet to receive, I praise and bless you. Amen, Alleluia.
