Vespers II of the 27th Sunday of the Year

Catechetical Week Begins.

Theme of the Sunday: MARRIAGE ACCORDING TO GOD’S PLAN.
The first reading and the gospel are about marriage and present the original plan of God. Why has he made us male and female? What was his purpose? The teaching of today is that the indissolubility of marriage, monogamy and chastity are not hard and unreasonable impositions of God, but a means to defend and protect the dignity of man and of woman and to make them happy. The second reading could be linked to this theme. Jesus is a man like us, and he understands all our difficulties in regard to sexuality. Christians have the duty to show understanding for couples who are in difficulty

THE GLORIA (When indicated this hymn is either sung or said)
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you. We bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen

FIRST READING
“They become one flesh.”
A reading from the Book of Genesis (Genesis 2:18-24)

The LORD God said, “it is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” so out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. The man gave names to all cattle, and to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for the man there was not found a helper fit for him. So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh; and the rib which the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said, “this at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of man.” Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and clings to his wife, and they become one flesh.

The word of the Lord.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 128:1-2.3.4-5.6 (R. see 5)
R/. May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives.

Blessed are all who fear the LORD,
and walk in his ways!
By the labour of your hands you shall eat.
You will be blessed and prosper. R/.

Your wife like a fruitful vine
in the heart of your house;
Your children like shoots of the olive
around your table. R/.

R/. May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives.

Indeed thus shall be blessed
the man who fears the LORD.
May the LORD bless you from Sion.
May you see Jerusalem prosper
all the days of your life! R/.

May you see your children’s children.
On Israel, peace! R/.

SECOND READING
“He who sanctifies and those who are sanctified have all one origin.”
A reading from the Letter to the Hebrews (Hebrews 2:9-11)

Brethren: we see Jesus, who for a little while was made lower than the angels, crowned with glory and honour because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through suffering. For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified have all one origin. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brethren.

The word of the Lord.

ALLELUIA 1 John 4:12
Alleluia. If we love one another, God abides in us, and his love is perfected in us. Alleluia.

GOSPEL
“What God has joined together, let no man put asunder.”
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark (Mark 10:2-16)

At that time: Pharisees came up and in order to test Jesus asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” He answered them, “What did Moses command you?” They said, “Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of divorce, and to put her away.” But Jesus said to them, “For your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment. But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’ ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man put asunder.” And in the house the disciples asked him again about this matter. And he said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another, commits adultery against her; and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.” *
And they were bringing children to him, that he might touch them; and the disciples rebuked them. But when Jesus saw it he was indignant, and said to them, “Let the children come to me, do not hinder them; for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.” And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands upon them.

The Gospel of the Lord. *

THE CREED (I Believe)
I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.  He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL

Celebrant:
It is the will of God that the covenant of marriage be embraced as a union in which a man and a woman share a life-long, faithful and fruitful love. Let us pray that married couples may have the grace to live in accordance with this divine plan.

FOR THE FAMILY OF GOD, THE CHURCH: that she may continue to be united in Christ and bear credible witness to him before the world. Let us pray to the Lord.

FOR OUR POLITICAL LEADERS: that in fulfilling their work of governance, they may key into God’s original plan for marriage and may always seek to protect the family as one of the treasures of humanity. Let us pray to the Lord.

FOR ALL MARRIED AND INTENDING COUPLES: that they may be given the grace to accept and live out God’s will on the indissoluble and covenantal nature of marriage, monogamy and chastity. Let us pray to the Lord.

FOR CHRISTIAN FAMILIES: that, through their life of prayer and love, they may truly be domestic churches and schools of true human growth. Let us pray to the Lord.

FOR OTHER INTENTIONS: (the sick, church projects or other activities).

FOR THE DEAD, ESPECIALLY THOSE OF OUR PARISH COMMUNITY AND FAMILY MEMBERS: that they may find eternal rest with the Lord. Let us pray to the Lord.

We pray in silence for our private intentions.

Celebrant:
God our heavenly Father, you established Holy Matrimony for the good of children and of the spouses. Grant that humanity may respect the ordinance you established for the institution of marriage and may married couples find in it joy, peace and fulfilment. Through Christ our Lord.

R/. Amen.

PERSONAL DEVOTIONAL
REFLECTION AND PRAYERS TO ST JOSEPH

According to St. John Damascene: “God gave St. Joseph the love, the care, and the authority of a father over Jesus. He gave him the affection of a father that he might guard him with great love; the solicitude of a father, that he might watch over him with care; and the authority of a father that he might feel sure that he would be obeyed in all that he arranged concerning this Son”.

Let Us Pray
St. Joseph, be always a father to us; and grant that we may be always thy faithful children.
