Vespers II of the 28th Sunday of the Year

Catechetical Week Ends

Theme of the Sunday: GO, SELL ALL THAT YOU HAVE.
In our life we are required to make many choices. Many things attract us, and we cannot have them all. To choose some things means that we have to renounce others. The readings of today are on this theme of “choice.” The first passage mentions the choice of Solomon. He preferred wisdom to the goods of this world. The gospel tells the story of the rich man; Jesus asks him to make a very committed and important choice: either follow him, giving up all his riches, or keep his goods and lose him. The second reading tells us that the word of God is like a double-edged sword that penetrates deeply and uncovers all that is hidden in the human being. This is the word that forces one to take radical decisions.

The Gloria (When indicated this hymn is either sung or said)
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you. We bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

FIRST READING
“I accounted wealth as nothing in comparison with wisdom.”
A reading from the Book of Wisdom 7:7-11

I prayed, and understanding was given me; I called upon God, and the spirit of wisdom came to me. I preferred her to sceptres and thrones, and I accounted wealth as nothing in comparison with her. Neither did I liken to her any priceless gem, because all gold is but a little sand in her sight, and silver will be accounted as clay before her. I loved her more than health and beauty, and I chose to have her rather than light, because her radiance never ceases. All good things came to me along with her, and in her hands uncounted wealth.

The word of the Lord.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 90: 12- 13.14-15. 16- 17 (R. cf. 14)
R/. Fill us with your merciful love, O Lord, and we shall exult.

Teach us to number our days,
that we may gain wisdom of heart.
Turn back, O Lord! How long?
Show pity to your servants. R/.

At dawn, fill us with your merciful love;
we shall exult and rejoice all our days.
Give us joy for the days of our affliction,
for the years when we looked upon evil. R/.

R/. Fill us with your merciful love, O Lord, and we shall exult.

Let your deed be seen by your servants,
and your glorious power by their children.
Let the favour of the Lord our God be upon us;
give success to the work of our hands.
O give success to the work of our hands. R/.

SECOND READING
A reading from the Letter to the Hebrews 4: 12-13
“The word of God discerns the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”

The word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And before him no creature is hidden, but all are open and laid bare to the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

The word of the Lord.

ALLELUIA Matthew 5:3
Alleluia. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Alleluia.

GOSPEL
“Go, sell what you have, and come, follow me.”
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark (Mark 10:17-30)

At that time: As Jesus was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: ‘Do not kill, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honour your father and mother.”’ And he said to him, “Teacher, all these I have observed from my youth.” And Jesus looking upon him loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing; go, sell what you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” At that saying his countenance fell, and he went away sorrowful; for he had great possessions. And Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it will be for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!” And the disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said to them again, “Children, how hard it is for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” And they were exceedingly astonished, and said to him, “Then who can be saved?” Jesus looked at them and said, “With men it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God.” ‘Peter began to say to him, “Behold, we have left everything and followed you.” Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the Gospel, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL

Celebrant:
Christ our Lord and Saviour invites us to be detached from the things of this world for the sake of inheriting eternal life. Let us pray to him to grant us the grace to remain focused on that which is truly important.

For the leaders of the church: that they may be inspired by the Holy Spirit in their proclamation of the Gospel, and thereby become equipped to guide the faithful in their journey of salvation. We pray O Lord.

For those who make laws in our country: that they may always be guided by divine wisdom, so that, in the exercise of their legislative power, they may respect the supremacy of divine and natural laws. We pray O Lord.

For those attached to material things: that they may seek first the kingdom of God and find renewed meaning in serving the Lord. We pray O Lord.

For youths in this worshipping community: that the choices they make in life may not lead them astray but place them on the path of life eternal. We pray O Lord.

For other intentions: (the sick, church projects or other activities).

For the dead, especially those of our parish community and family members: that they may find eternal rest with the Lord. We pray O Lord.

We pray in silence for our private intentions.

Celebrant:
Lord of light, your word is ever alive and active. May this word continue to enlighten us at all times, so that the decisions we make in our ordinary life situations may ever be pleasing to you. Through Christ our Lord.

R/. Amen.

TODAY’S REFLECTION
The only treasure that lasts is love. Every bit of kindness, generosity and hospitality we extend to others is our treasure of love. When we put our faith in the power of love, extend our energy in practicing love every day, and seek to be guided in our daily lives by Jesus’ examples of love, we are building a treasure that will never run out. Sometimes we spend more time surfing the internet than helping those in need. Or we spend more time at work than with our family. Sometimes we pay more attention to our possessions than to God’s law of love. Or we spend more time shopping for new clothes than reading the Bible. We cannot hide behind our work, our possessions, or our activities. We must always find ways to touch the hearts of those who need reassurance of God’s presence in the world.

PERSONAL DEVOTIONAL
REFLECTION AND PRAYERS TO ST JOSEPH

O great St. Joseph, since God has served thee, I also wish to enroll myself in thy service. I wish henceforth to serve thee, to honour and love thee. Take me under thy protection and dispose of me as thou pleases. My holy St. Joseph, pray to Jesus for me. Having obeyed all thy commands on earth, he will certainly never refuse anything thou ask of him. Tell him to pardon me the offences that I have committed against him. Tell him to detach me from creatures and from myself. Ask him to inflame me with his holy love.

Let Us Pray
St. Joseph, watch over us, thy children. Amen
