TOPIC: Faith Works! (DCLM Daily Manna 31 March 2024)
KEY VERSE: “Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow there to sustain thee” (1 Kings 17:9).
TEXT: 1 Kings 17:8-16 (KJV)
8 And the word of the Lord came unto him, saying,
9 Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow there to sustain thee.
10 So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow was gathering of sticks: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.
11 And as she was going to fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thine hand.
12 And she said, As the Lord thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but a handful of meal in a barrel and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it and die.
13 And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said. But make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after that make it for thee and for thy son.
14 For thus saith the Lord God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the Lord sendeth rain upon the earth.
15 And she went and did according to Elijah’s command: and she, and he, and her house, ate many days.
16 And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the Lord, which he spake by Elijah.
DCLM Daily Manna For Today MESSAGE:
Famine is ancient and recurrent in human history. Abraham and his sons and grandsons, Isaac and Jacob, had their own experiences of this unpleasant situation. However, God gave each of them victory.
The text reveals another episode of famine in the land of Israel. The whole nation, including the prophet of God, felt the devastation that this calamity unleashed on the people. The divine providence that brought Elijah the prophet, the widow of Zarephath, and her household out of famine is the focus of our reflection this day.

Elijah obeyed God’s instructions to Zarephath and dwelled there for sustenance. The widow, on her part, obeyed with adorable submission the word and instruction of the prophet to provide him with a little cake. And the God of miracle multiplied the meager flour and oil of the poor woman into a storehouse of food that sustained them all. “And she went an” “id according to the saying of Elijah, and she and he (Elijah) and her house, did eat many days.”
Faith in the l”v” ng God and obedience to His faithful servants will bring us all the needed miracles. Indeed, faith in Christ can enable us to soar over all problematic situations. The force and effect of faith in action are pretty observable in the lives of trusting saints. Faith fixes all things for us, including food in famine. True! We can all feed fat in famine when we obey God’s word and where He has given our assistance.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
