BIBLE PASSAGE: John 15:1-6 (KJV) (Scroll down for RCCG Sunday School 14 July 2024 HYMN)

1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.

2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.

3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.

4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.

5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

INTRODUCTION:

Fruit-bearing is expected of anyone chosen and saved by Jesus Christ (John 15:16). God reacts to fruitlessness the same way He reacts to rebellion because failure to bear fruit is rebellion against the commandment and purpose of God (John 15:4). For any branch of the vine to be barren or unfruitful it must have been separated from the vine making it impossible for the fluid of life that flows from the vine to reach it.

LESSON OUTLINES:

  1. CAUSES OF FRUITLESSNESS
  2. INHERENT DANGERS

1. CAUSES OF FRUITLESSNESS

  1. Ignorance of the sound word of God (1 Corinthians 3:1-2; Hebrews 5:12-14).
  2. Lack of genuine repentance from sin and other vices (Ezekiel 18:30-32).
  3. Pre-occupation with the affairs of this world.(Matthew 13:22).
  4. Timidity in identifying with the gospel publicly (Romans 1:16).
  5. Inadequate understanding of the blessings of fruitfulness (1 Thessalonians 2:19).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Discuss other causes of fruitlessness among believers.

2. INHERENT DANGERS

  1. The presence of God could depart from the unfruitful (1 Samuel 16:14).
  2. It could bring about a reversal of blessing with curses (1 Samuel 2:30-34).
  3. God will spew out the unfruitful, for being neither hot nor cold (Revelation 3:15-16).
  4. Self-exposure to enemy’s attacks (Judges 16:18-21).
  5. Total annihilation of a fruitless being (Luke 13:6-9).

Students should discuss how believers can be fruitful

CONCLUSION: Fruitfulness has great gains but fruitlessness is dangerous. Be fruitful!

QUESTIONS:

  1. Give one major cause of fruitlessness?
  2. Give one example of how fruitlessness can cause a reversal of blessing.
